I posted the key article by Professor Sholem as it originally appeared in the September 1949 issue of COMMENTARY (a journal I value most highly) to my Wrangler Steve Facebook. I should like to make the article more user-friendly in this space.
Has the six pointed star when doubled and sharing a duplicate center, always symbolized the Hebrew people? What does the star mean?
No, despite what people think they know the hexagram did not sybolize the Jewish people before the 17th century. It is not in the Bible. Nor was it part of mystical movements spawned in the Christian Medieval centuries.
It isn’t Solomon’s Ring with the Ineffable name of the Hebrew deity inscribed on its surface.
Adolf Hitler who famously borrowed the non-German swastika for his Nazi hate movement ordered every Jew to wear the Star of David as a badge or brand to first exclude and then exterminate from the Thousand Year Reich. He meant the mark for evil but the Zion movement turned the Badge of Hatred into a Star of Hope.
